‘Investing in the Environment: The Business Case - hailed a huge success!

The Investors in the Environment team have hosted their first event in the North, at the National Railway Museum in York.

The event, held on 27th June, attracted over 50 delegates from across the Yorkshire region, from a range of different sectors, including further education, environmental technology and IT, all interested in learning about the business case for environmental improvements within their organisations.    Over the course of the morning the speakers demonstrated how environmental improvements and the right marketing strategy can increase competitive edge, reduce costs and make businesses more sustainable in the long term.
Ed Ryder, Director of Biskit and Chair of the mid Yorkshire Charted Institute of Marketing, spoke about what sustainability means, how it can be important in terms of differentiation and long term profitability and the importance of building brand loyalty and trust. Jo Swann, from Chocolate PR, then went on to explain how green credentials remain a hot topic within the media, and how, with the right angle you can gain press exposure for good environmental practice to really set yourself apart from competitors and raise the profile of your organisation.
Derek Jackson from Agfa Graphics, provided an excellent case study, with an inspired talk about his own experiences of ‘greening’ their site in Leeds. He shared the changes that Agfa Graphics have made to their waste disposal practices and how simple, easy to implement systems have led to reduced waste costs, and even income generation from some waste streams.
Finally, Emma Davies from the Yorkshire Energy Partnership introduced the Investors in the Environment scheme (iiE),an environmental accreditation that can provide a framework for improvements, as well as giving businesses the opportunity the demonstrate their green credentials to stakeholders.  There are three levels of accreditation available to businesses, Bronze, Silver and Green which means that wherever a business is on their green journey, the scheme can bring real value and support a culture of continual improvement.
Emma said “It was great to see so many local businesses at the first iiE event in the North, and a number of businesses are keen to join following the event.  Businesses want to have their good work recognised with an environmental accreditation and can see the added value that this brings, such as financial savings, PR opportunities, brand loyalty and customer trust”.
Membership of iiE includes an extensive events programme, with a variety of themed events taking place throughout the year. For event notifications and the monthly e-newsletter pledge your support for the scheme at  http://north.iie.uk.com/.
